Bulk Slag Cement, Priced the Way You Actually Use It.

A price per ton of slag cement tells a batch plant almost nothing. What matters is the cementitious cost per cubic yard after replacement, and what the concrete does at 7 and 28 days. This page does that math in the open and quotes bulk loads delivered anywhere in Texas from the Houston grinding hub.

Cost per yard, not per ton. Send your mix and replacement percentage. We quote the slag line per cubic yard so the comparison to portland or fly ash is apples to apples.
Full loads, standing or call-in. About 25 tons per pneumatic tanker. Standing weekly loads get priority when grinders run tight.

The Replacement Math, Worked Out

Assume 564 lb of cementitious per cubic yard, a common six-sack equivalent. Here is how much slag one 25-ton load covers at each replacement rate, and what that does to the portland line.

Replacement rateSlag per yardYards per 25-ton loadPortland saved per yard
30%169 lb~295169 lb
40%226 lb~220226 lb
50%282 lb~175282 lb
70% (mass concrete only)395 lb~125395 lb

Slag cement generally prices below portland per ton in Houston because it is ground from a byproduct. Where it prices above, freight or a tight grinder is the reason. Either way the per-yard number is what decides, and we will run it with your actual mix.

Slag Cement or Fly Ash: The Honest Comparison

Hasten supplies both, so there is no reason to oversell either. They are different tools.

Slag cement

Finer, more reactive, stronger late

About 1 to 2 percent retained on the No. 325 sieve. Higher 28 and 56 day strength, better sulfate and chloride resistance, lower permeability, lighter color, lower heat. Slightly slower set. Usually the better choice for durability specs, marine and below-grade work, and mass pours.

Class C fly ash

Faster set, self-cementing, cheaper per ton

Carries its own calcium, so it sets without help and dries wet material. Usually the lowest cost per ton. Coal-plant supply is tightening as plants retire. The better choice for fast-turn platform work and where early strength drives the schedule.

Both together

Ternary mixes

Portland, slag and fly ash in one mix is common and TxDOT Item 421 Option 3 allows it. Slag brings durability, ash brings workability and cost. Many Texas producers run this way.

The catch

Replacement is not free

High replacement slows early strength, especially below 60 degrees. Finishing, stripping and cold-weather placement need to account for it. We will tell you where the line is for your mix rather than let you find it on a pour.

How Bulk Loads Move

DetailWhat to expect
Load sizeAbout 25 tons, bulk pneumatic tanker
MinimumFull loads; under 20 tons is a shortload with a shortload fee
Houston metroNext-day, subject to producer availability
DFW, Austin, San AntonioTwo to three days by truck; rail to a terminal for steady volume
South and West TexasQuoted per job
PaperworkMill certificate with fineness and SO3, TxDOT producer code, SDS
TermsStandard commercial terms

Freight is the price outside Houston. The material costs the same in Dallas as in Houston. The difference is the truck. Standing volume by rail to a local terminal can cut that substantially for a plant that runs slag every week.

Slag for soil, not concrete?

On high-sulfate clay, 5 percent slag cement with 1 percent lime replaces a 6 percent lime job and stops the heave. Different dosage, different economics, own page.

Bulk Slag Cement Questions, Answered Straight

How many yards of concrete does a load of slag cement make?

At 564 lb of cementitious per yard: about 295 yards at 30 percent replacement, 220 at 40 percent, 175 at 50 percent. Send your mix and we will run the exact number.

Is slag cement cheaper than portland?

Usually, per ton, in Houston. Outside Houston freight narrows the gap. The number that matters is cost per cubic yard after replacement, and we quote it that way.

Slag cement or fly ash?

Slag for durability, late strength, sulfate and chloride resistance, and mass concrete. Class C fly ash for fast set, workability, and lowest cost per ton. Many mixes use both. We supply both and will say which fits.

What is the minimum order?

Full pneumatic tanker loads of about 25 tons. Under 20 tons is a shortload with a shortload fee.

Is the material TxDOT listed?

Yes. We supply from a Houston producer on the TxDOT Slag Cement Material Producer List, DMS-4620, Grade 100 or better, with the producer code on every quote.
